Why should there be an ethical foundation?


Coaching and Mentoring puts the coaches and mentors working with their clients in a very privileged position.  It is a position from which each coach and or mentor can enrich the lives of their client, but where the wrong coach or mentor is selected, could cause harm.

Education and Training are key to the success of the ability of each coach and mentor.  This education or training gives the coach or mentor the ability to help the clients make the changes that they desire.  In this way, the Universities, Colleges, Schools, and Private Commercial Training Organisations are central to the success of the work undertaken by each Coach or Mentor.

It is because of the harm that the Coach or Mentor can do when they are working with their client, and no less than any other profession, Coaching and Mentoring requires clear behavioural guidelines.

These behavioural guidelines do not stand on their own and the IRCM CIC endorses the following Core Values as the basis for these behavioural guidelines (in alphabetical order):

  • Honest
  • Integrity
  • Professionalism
  • Transparency

The creation of the industry recognised Standards and Ethics is the result of combining each Professional Bodies codes and applying these Core Values to each area of the clients’ life, in which each Coach or Mentor and their related Education/Training organisation has a responsibility.

The complaints registered with the Ombudsman Service and additional research shows that when things go wrong in a Coaching or Mentoring relationship it is undoubtedly the result of the lack of a rigourous application of the core values to the areas of responsibility.
