New Year’s Eve is one of the largest global celebrations, simply because it recognises the last day of the calendar year – 31st December – in the Gregorian calendar; before the start of a New Year – 1st January.
Globally millions of people celebrate New Year’s Eve to say ‘farewell’ to one calendar year and ‘welcome’ to the next calendar year. This year though, things will be very different. Instead of going out to celebrate, as was ‘normal’, globally millions of people will be staying at home and looking for ways to celebrate!
Just because your New Year’s Eve will be a lot different this year does not mean that you should not celebrate. After reflecting on this year you will be clear about your successes and your achievements, and this New Year’s Eve could be the start of a new ritual or habit which finds you celebrating your success and your achievements at home with your family and within the restrictions under which you are living.
With the right amount of planning, you can throw the most incredible New Year’s Eve party at home!
dress up – put on your party clothes.
adjust your Christmas decorations to include new decorations for New Year’s Eve.
start the day with a New Year’s Eve brunch. Brunch is often said to be the best meal for a party day, so splash out! Create the brunch of your dreams.
spend sometime during the day creating a 2020 Scrapbook. There’s no doubt that 2020 is a year to remember, and you can do this, either by asking everyone to create their own or creating a single Scrapbook for everyone in your family and within the restrictions under which you are living.
don’t forget to take more photographs. These can be added to your Scrapbook highlighting your New Year’s day/eve celebrations.
get onto Zoom or Skype or WhatsApp or Facetime or any video conferencing software and include others in your party.
play games. There are hundreds of thousands of traditional and new games – some of which can be played across video conferencing software.
mix a cocktail or two. Cocktail’s do not have to be alcoholic. Don’t forget to make your cocktails look spectacular – add fruit, bubbles, etc.
make a memory jar. Start your memory jar with all your successes, achievements and learnings in 2020. Over the next twelve months keep adding to this jar for each new success, achievement, or learning. At the end of 2021, this jar will help you reflect or just take a walk down memory lane.
make a festive meal to the same or better quality you could get in a restaurant. It isn’t too difficult to do, but just takes planning, time, and effort.
while you are at the table enjoying your festival meal, ask each person in turn to share the details of one success or achievement. Join with them to recognise and celebrate their success or achievment. Don’t forget yourself.
prepare how to celebrate midnight! Do you want to sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ or ‘blow a trumpet’ or ‘burst balloons’. Obviously whatever you choose to do must take your neighbours into consideration, and one way you could celebrate is to follow the NHS clapping idea of meeting your neighbours outside in a socially distancing way to ‘bring in the New Year’.
